Nikolaev Zoo is considered to be one of the best in Europe. It is a part of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). It was founded on the initiative of the City President Nikolai Leontovich as a private aquarium-museum, with free access of the public. Now the collection includes nearly 5690 individuals and 460 species, many of which are listed in the Red Book. Big animals have the greatest success of the visitors: lions, tigers, bears, hippos.
